Our Clinical Approach

Integrative approach

We do not believe in a ‘one-size-fits-all’  approach.

Our clinical approach is integrative, meaning that we draw on a range of psychological techniques and approaches to best support each individual.

We utilise relevant evidence-based approaches including CBT, Mindfulness, existential/humanistic approaches, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Our innovative ‘Counselling for Rare Conditions’ training is mandatory for all clinicians who work with us.

We support clients to manage and alleviate emotional distress by providing the opportunity to explore difficult feelings and experiences that may be difficult to express elsewhere. Where appropriate, we may also support clients to learn simple techniques to help manage anxiety, stress, low mood, pain or fatigue. We also explore with clients the history and meaning of their unique experiences and responses in the context of both their past, and present, in order to help a rare condition diagnosis be part of, but not all of, their life.

From a clinical perspective, we are client focused, not symptom-led.

We aim to have a lasting impact for our client’s emotional wellbeing, and to have a positive impact on their capacity to adapt to, and live as well as possible, with their condition.

Unlike many statutory services, we encourage clients to re-access the service again at a later date should they wish, or feel the need, to do so. We see that as a sign of a successful therapeutic experience, rather than a ‘treatment failure.’

It is not unusual for clients to have a series of sessions, and re-approach for counselling several months or even years later should their rare condition – or life circumstances – have altered. We will always seek to place a client with their original counsellor whenever possible.
