global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Acknowledging your feelings<\/h2>\n<p>There is no right or wrong way to feel when you receive a diagnosis. You might have a lot of strong feelings straightaway and\/or find that different feelings emerge over time.<\/p>\n<p>It can also take time to work out what you think and feel. We all process feelings differently, at a different pace, and in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the feelings commonly experienced and some suggestions of ways to help manage them.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a partner, looking at the list with them might also help you talk to each other. You might feel bewildered, or wonder if it&#8217;s correct.<\/p>\n<p>If you have been looking for a diagnosis for some time you might feel relieved that you now know what is \u2018wrong\u2019. Having a name for, or way of describing a genetic condition, can also help you explain it more easily to others.<\/p>\n<p>As part of coming to terms with a diagnosis\u00a0 you might also have thoughts such as \u2018why me?\u2019 or \u2018I can&#8217;t believe this is happening&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Finding ways to &#8216;make sense&#8217; of what happens to us in our lives is part of being human. There are often no easy answers to these big life questions. It can help to bear in mind that we often fill the future with our worst fears and worries, particularly when there is a lot that may be uncertain or unclear. Things will not necessarily unfold in the way we first imagine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Try to take things &#8216;one step at a time&#8217;. If you have specific questions, worries or fears try to find the right person who can help you think them through. This is the case whether you are affected with the condition, or are a partner\/carer or a parent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong>You might feel guilty about:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>the impact on people you care about<\/li>\n<li>wishing a partner or child were different<\/li>\n<li>not coping in the way you would like to<\/li>\n<li>being reluctant to take on a new role<\/li>\n<li>being angry or emotional<\/li>\n<li>feeling jealous towards other people who are not so affected<\/li>\n<li>about passing the condition on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6a10339a-ae69-4824-9a8c-c95a3a24d0c3&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Managing your guilt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Remind yourself that you did not choose to have your condition. If your child inherited their condition, you did not choose this either.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on things that you have more control over, not the things you don&#8217;t. This might include how you show your love and care to the people who matter to you.<\/p>\n<p>When we are dealing with difficult situations, or coping with changes, we are not always at our best. This can include how we look, behave or what we can do.<\/p>\n<p>What makes us feel embarrassed or ashamed is very personal. We are not all vulnerable to being shamed in the same way. When we don\u2019t do this it tends to \u2018go inside\u2019, or get expressed in ways that upset someone close to you.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6a10339a-ae69-4824-9a8c-c95a3a24d0c3&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Managing your anger<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Try physical actions that \u2018let it out\u2019 like finding somewhere private and yelling\/screaming, and\/or hitting a cushion or pillow. If possible for you, some exercise or movement can also help.<\/li>\n<li>Distract yourself &#8211; listen to loud music, play an aggressive video game, cover a blank piece of paper with pen scribble.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself if anger is the \u2018tip of an iceberg\u2019? Is there sadness, grief or fear underneath it too?<\/li>\n<li>Talk to someone who will \u2018get it\u2019. You may feel resentful at what other people have, or the ways in which your life is different or difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes envy can feel so uncomfortable that we withdraw from other people, rather than \u2018run the risk\u2019 of it being seen.
