custom_margin_tablet=&#8221;|2vw|30px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Grief is the word used to describe the feelings we have in response to loss.<\/p>\n<p>We often use it to describe the feelings after a bereavement, but grief occurs after other types of <a href=\"\/wellbeing-hub\/uncertainty-change-loss\/change-and-loss\">change and loss<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<p>You might not have initially recognised the feelings you had at the time as grief.<\/p>\n<p>When you are impacted by a rare condition, there can be a lot of different types of change and loss to cope with.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>following a diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>changes to abilities or health stability<\/li>\n<li>changes to lifestyle or circumstances<\/li>\n<li>after difficult news<\/li>\n<li>changes to appearance<\/li>\n<li>changes to relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Recognising when you are &#8216;grieving&#8217; is important.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It helps you both look after yourself during this time, and also support others if necessary too.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Anticipatory grief<\/h2>\n<p>We often think of grief as the feeling we have after loss. \u2018Anticipatory grief\u2019 is the term used to describe the feelings associated with a loss before it actually happens.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The hardest part for me was accepting that T won\u2019t do all the things I\u2019d imagined a daughter I had would \u2013 get married, have children etc. I love her fiercely, but she won&#8217;t \u2018grow up\u2019 in that sense.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Anticipatory grief in the context of a rare condition may be about:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the loss of the future you had imagined before receiving a diagnosis, or news of disease change<\/li>\n<li>how your body, appearance, or abilities might change<\/li>\n<li>life experiences that may no longer be possible<\/li>\n<li>changes to roles or relationships<\/li>\n<li>the loss of a loved one<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p>My friends were talking about having kids. That\u2019s much more complicated for me as I don\u2019t know how that\u2019s all going to go \u2026 my condition can be inherited. It made me feel different again. I felt pretty upset afterwards, wondering what I\u2019ll do.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; custom_margin_tablet=&#8221;|2vw|30px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Understanding grief<\/h2>\n<p>We all experience grief in our own ways, about different things. It can be helpful to recognise that you might have very strong feelings about a particular loss, but someone else might be more upset about something very different.<\/p>\n<p>The type of losses we feel most deeply are often very personal and unique to each of us. Sometimes, we can become very self-critical when we are experiencing grief, or believe we should not feel as strongly as we do.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I had always imagined I\u2019d have a child who would be very active, into fitness like me. Allow the wave to &#8216;break&#8217; by having a good cry and the feelings to be present. It can include lots of different thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, just when you thought you had come to terms with something, grief may surprise you again.<\/p>\n<p>Grief can also feel very physical. You might feel pain or emptiness, stomach aches, changes to your appetite or sleep patterns, headaches, exhaustion or muscle and joint pain.<\/p>\n<p>You might also feel relief, guilt, anger, sadness, longing, tearfulness, lack of appetite, exhaustion, irritability, longing, withdrawal, lonely, empty, hopeful, brain fog, blank or numb.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>The stages of grief<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;There are really only two stages of grief, &#8230; who you were before and who you are after.\u201d\u00a0 Ted Rynearson<\/p>\n<p>Grieving is much more of an \u2018experience\u2019, than a neat step-by-step process. It can often feel much more messy and unpredictable than we would like.<\/p>\n<p>There are, however, generally accepted to be certain experiences that grieving usually involves. <a href=\"https:\/\/speakinggrief.org\/get-better-at-grief\/understanding-grief\/no-step-by-step-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speaking Grief<\/a> has resources and more information about these.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Growing around grief<\/h2>\n<p>It can be helpful to think about grief as something to both &#8216;make space&#8217; for, even while everyday life continues alongside it.<\/p>\n<p>Feelings of grief never completely go away.\u00a0 Someone \u2013 or something \u2013 will always be missed. Even though it may feel hard to believe initially, the feelings of grief will feel less &#8216;big&#8217; inside over time as you learn to live with the loss you have been through.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, there will be more room for good memories and new experiences, and for the sadness to take up less room inside.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;0c38199e-3a1d-4d5d-826d-ef93f305cb70&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>What helps?<\/h2>\n<h3>Validate your feelings &#8211; don\u2019t judge how\u00a0you feel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We all worry that some thoughts or feelings might not be acceptable, or will be too painful in some way.<\/li>\n<li>Accepting difficult feelings is not the same as liking them.<\/li>\n<li>Reassure yourself your thoughts and feelings are very normal given what you are \u2013 or have been &#8211;\u00a0 coping with.<\/li>\n<li>Other people acknowledging the losses and changes you have been through, and that your feelings are understandable, can also be very reassuring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Be kind to yourself<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Being patient with yourself is an important act of self-kindness.<\/li>\n<li>Accepting and processing change and loss takes time.<\/li>\n<li>Thoughts like \u2018I shouldn\u2019t be feeling like this\u2019 are common, but not helpful.<\/li>\n<li>If you find yourself behaving in ways you don\u2019t feel good about, ask for help.<\/li>\n<li>What would you say to a friend who was going through something similar? Can you offer yourself the same care and advice?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Be specific about the support you want<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Often people want to help, but don&#8217;t know how to, so let them know exactly how they can help.<\/li>\n<li>Examples of how you might be specific about the help you need: \u2018<em>I need to go with my wife to the hospital. Could you collect our child for us today after school?<\/em>\u2019 or <em>\u2018Do you have time for a coffee and a chat ? I could really do with talking things over\u2019.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Think about \u2018who helps\u2019 &#8211; and how?<\/h2>\n<p>Talking to someone you trust can help you cope with changes practically. It can also help you work through difficult thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p>However, it can help to first spend some time thinking about \u2018who is good for what\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You may find that some people are more able to help either emotionally or practically.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emotionally<\/strong> by being a listening ear, someone to have a good cry (or shout) with etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practically<\/strong> by helping with childcare or dropping round a meal etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try not to muddle up these two types of people as it can then be very disappointing and frustrating. People who are good at both are a great asset to your life!<\/p>\n<p>If you need to make adjustments at work or with studies to help you cope with these more effectively, remember that you are legally entitled to ask for these. This is true whether you are a carer or an affected person.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.3&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;6d2bc1d8-a2e9-472c-821a-6aa6bc293122&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Reaching out for support<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes when we are struggling emotionally or very stressed, it can be hard not only to \u2018think\u2019, but also to reach out for help and advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The prompts below might help in thinking through what sort of help you might need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the most difficult thing causing me distress right now? Is it practical issues such as lack of mobility, symptoms, my emotions, my relationships?<\/li>\n<li>Who can I talk to for help that I am already in contact with? GP, rare disease doctor, social worker, rare condition organisation?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any related organisations or services where I can look up information? Support for parents, carers, money worries?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any friends, family members or advocacy supporters I could ask to help me find out more about what is available?
